Carl Hansen was a designer and cabinet maker from Denmark, and his company is now run by his grandson. The company design and craft wooden furniture to the highest quality, to the most stringent environmental standards. One of Carl Hansen’s most iconic and best-selling chairs is the ‘Wishbone’ chair, designed by Hans J Wegner. The chair is simple, attractive and light, and most commonly used in dining and breakout areas. Made by hand, a single wishbone chair takes more than 100 steps to produce through stages that include carpentry and creating the hand woven cord seat. This chair is available in a simple wooden finish or a range of colours.
Another of Wegner’s most famous designs for Carl Hansen is the ‘Shell’ chair. A low, broad, wing-shaped lounge chair, the Shell Chair is a curved statement chair on a set of three legs. Available to be upholstered in either fabric or leather, the chair has won numerous awards for design and public appeal – often being referred to as ‘The Smiling Chair’, and gives the appearance of ‘floating’ through its wing-shaped design and the smooth curves of its backrest and legs.
